Preparing Canvas for Oil Painting

Let’s look at the support we will use for the exercise – we chose a small sized canvas board – just 12×18 cm (5×7 inches). This is the simplest canvas board you can find in any art supply shop. There is no need to cover the surface with an extra coat of primer. We are not going to create a masterpiece here – just practice different types of oil painting techniques. Alternatively, you can choose other options like Oil Painting Paper, for example, or an unstretched primed canvas.
