How to Paint Shadows in Oil Painting

Session Five

It is time to place highlights with Titanium White. We use a little amount of Stand Linseed Oil as a medium. The paint is spread out with a clean brush.

For glazed shades, use Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber, mixed with Stand Linseed Oil.

Burnt Sienna can be added to the mix, which will be used to paint the fur mantle. Add Venetian Red, if necessary, to make the mix warmer. A Stiff Hog Brush is the best choice for the task.

To glaze skin tones, we use a Soft Brush. A tiny amount of Brawn is added to the White paint. The white shirt is painted with sketchy strokes. Add more Stand Oil to the Brown mix. A Dark Brown mix can also be used for the earrings. Stand Oil is added to the mix.

For highlights, we use Titanium White with Stand Oil. Apply highlights in relief.

While the paint is still wet, work on the details on the white shirt. It’s time to leave the painting to dry.
