Artwork and story from Isabel Amalie-Marie Stumphauzer
As a new mom and wife, art inhabits the weaned, in-between moments of my life—a hurried sketch, eeked out after rocking my sweet babe to sleep, a paint palate sitting, drying out on my desk, a plan to visit a museum this week with my daughter in low. Though I rarely find that inspiration that captivates lately, when I do, creation is the thing that makes every breath feel eager and delightful. That cliche becomes true— time stands still— or is it that it flies by? Both feel true.

The Old Masters Academy provides a seriousness in its instruction that is difficult to find elsewhere. It doesn’t talk about art and creativity as being ‘cute’ or ‘a nice pass time’. It speaks of art as beauty and as a means of conveying that which words fail to. It does not emphasize self expression breaking free from tradition, but rather submitting oneself to the wisdom a lineage of masters.
I hope to win this course to provide a structured learning trajectory; to enforce practice and skill-building in the absence of inspiration, and to benefit from assignments and criticism. Through this cohesive and structured curriculum, I aspire to gain the skills and practice to make the creation of beautiful art a regular part of my life.
