How to Varnish a Painting
This painting was created with no glaze layers. That’s why we see a more or less united surface, however it still has some glanced fragments.
After the painting has completely dried, it can be varnished.
We already know the process of varnishing.
We place the canvas flat on the horizontal surface and coat the canvas with varnish in one direction. Then, we dry it against a wall overnight.
The second varnish layer should be applied in a different direction.
That’s how the painting looks before and after varnishing. The Varnish made the surface of the painting look uniform, but have you noticed what else has been changed? The dark blue background color has become deeper in Color and a bit darker in Tone.
