Artwork by Kathryn D Smith
I have been getting emails from Old Masters Academy for a number of years now, looking at and reading them, trying to learn something from their pictures, never being able to afford the amount of money needed to to do the course. I had looked at the Art Competition on a number of occasions and just told myself I was never good enough to win. I have just kept painting, doing the one thing in life that has meaning to me and is my escape from my daily life as a carer. I started portrait painting about a year ago, and know I need to improve my application and master techniques that I know Old Masters Art Academy teaches. I am in my latter years of life 74, but I believe you can never stop learning and one can paint right up to their end days.
Do I want to be famous? I’ve left my run a bit late. However I want to leave a legacy for my family that will say “this is who I am”. Art is a God given gift and I think I should take it as far as I can.
My biggest challenge to my Art, is life itself, which always demands my attention first, jostling for time and energy to find a teacher who can take my foundation onto a higher plane. There are many teachers on line but very few who do it “right” I also don’t want to just be a copy of my teacher, I want to take their applications and apply them, so it not only improves my own outcome but allows me to keep my own style. Having looked at those who have done or are doing Old Masters Academy, you can see how the Artist has improved their own works. The Old Masters had something special . A certain “glow” in the way they laid down the paint and the colours they used. Their Portraits seem to almost be alive. I want that in my Portraits. I have a beautiful photo of my daughter that I want to capture on canvas and Old Masters is the only way to go to start it. This is why I want to win.
“The Patient” is a portrait of my sister and I playing doctors and nurses with our dog when we were little. Dad took a black and white photo and I attempted a Portrait of us both just before I attempted the painting of Old Friends.
My Painting “Old Friends” was my third attempt at a Portrait. I took a photo I had of my Husband Gary, from about 20 years ago, and surrounded him by the things that define who he is. I like my paintings to tell a story and I think this does.
Vote for My Painting OLD FRIENDS or THE PATIENT
People will vote for paintings that speak to them. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the “Best.’ We see this in Juried competitions where we ask ourselves “How did that Win.” Obviously it spoke to the judge. A painting that they can connect to. So I am hoping that “Old Friends” or “The Patient” does exactly that. Connects to you, takes you back in time to your memories and Old Friends.
Kind Regards,

The patient painting reminds me of days gone by. As these are my sisters. I love it.
