I wanted to be an art teacher

When I was five years old, my first ambition was to become a painter. As I grew older, my interests shifted, but they were always art-related, whether I wanted to be an art teacher, a comic artist, or an illustrator, for example. I had my first opportunity to learn to paint when I was in second grade, but it was unfortunately cancelled after two sessions due to low enrollment.

My second artistic opportunity came in the ninth grade. I was overjoyed at first, but quickly became disappointed. The teacher only showed me how to trace and provided no traditional skill training. My parents were unable to afford the class fees, and I was once again forced to leave.

When it came time for college, I had to create and manage my own portfolio, and luckily, I was accepted to the School of Visual Arts in New York. I was ecstatic to learn’real’ art. It was yet another discouraging experience because my painting professor said, “Skills don’t matter.” All I learned there was how to paint and draw without any guidance. My professors’ only words of encouragement were, “That’s good.” I wanted to learn more about how the old masters created their magnificent works, as well as their rigorous methods and skills, but I couldn’t find the answers to my questions.

I wanted to be an art teacher

I had to return home after the first semester of college because we could no longer afford the tuition and I needed to work full-time to support my family. After a few years of working and ignoring my creative abilities, I decided it was time to do something with my art, and after weeks of research, I discovered Web Art Academy.

Many questions I’d had for a long time were answered by the website. Web Art Academy taught me practical and innovative ways to overcome creative obstacles; having the opportunity to study at the Old Masters Academy will allow me to combine all of the lessons I’ve learned on Web Art so far.

I feel great and motivated when I begin a painting. Most artists will understand that I truly feel alive, but I can’t seem to finish a painting because I feel lost, and I become mired in self-doubt; as if I need a few arrows to guide me and help portray the painting in the way that I truly desire.

I would be extremely grateful if I were to win the Old Masters Academy; I am eager to receive any training I can get in order to finally achieve the skills I’ve desired and avoid becoming discouraged again. Thank you very much!
