As a child I loved to draw and paint, rushing home from school to watch The John Nagy Learn to Draw show. On Saturdays I attended a children’s class at the Vancouver School of Art but then, in my teens, my confidence eroded.
I have always been self-critical but I was also joined by an art teacher who did not encourage my efforts, telling me not to proceed in his “field”. I dropped it all, just like that. Over time, I would take a drawing class or a painting class and my enthusiasm would soar . . . and then land again. There seemed to be no purpose for my work. …
