Paintings by Susan Marshall
Vincent Van Gogh affected my emotions when I was five, I felt his intensely passionate expression disturbing. It affected me as a stormy ocean, alarming and disquieting…
At seven I was moved by music, dancing around to the feeling getting lost in its embrace. Mom gave me lessons…….
Dance, dance, dance, in high school, college and through my energetic years…world culture was my domain…Ghana, Nigeria, Morocco, Tunesia, Algeria, Egypt, Greece, Spain, China, Japan and India…..until at last…..I had to choose another love…..Shakespeare, Stanislavsky, method acting, the stage, tiny performances…
Having spent a lifetime with these arts, I came to drawing and painting later. Later means after I had the courage. Quite by chance I saw a wonderful realistic full portrait drawing in a gallery window on my way to work. I loved it. I discovered the same painting reproduced on a flyer advertising art classes. I wrote to the painter who never responded and read through his biography to find he trained in Florence, Italy.
Two years later I spent 8 years in two academic academies, and surprisingly never learned to paint the traditional, time honoured way of the masters. I had wonderful teachers and the experience to study the impressionist style, but the desire to paint like the old Italian masters still remains.
