Like many, as a child I enjoyed art. As I grew, I somehow was advised the idea that one must focus on ‘serious’ topics in life to get; becoming an artist was not an option for me.

After many years, I found myself sad and uninspired. Searching for a reason, I’d often run across recommendations to ‘follow your bliss” or “do what you love.” My problem was that I did not know what I loved.

One day I happened to run across local art classes and suddenly realized that all I want to do is art! I started with the old set of colored pencils, eventually moving to pastels, watercolor, etc.

I am a lifelong artist and writer who – while having had a few exhibitions and studio tours – have always felt forced by circumstances to treat my art as a hobby…the story of a lot of us artists, right? But one must make a living, but upon observation lately, I have noticed that the internet and establishments such as Old Masters Academy are making it easily for artists like me to “come in out of the cold”.

My biggest artistic challenges right now, is making the time to paint, but I do try..however, it’s not as often as I would like to be able to.

Art is vital like breathing

I am a middle aged busy healthcare professional with little time left for my real passion which is drawing and watercolor. But the basics of drawing need to be mastered for the success of any painting. So the Old Masters Academy course would be ideal because you can go at your own rhythm whenever you have more spare time and improve.

I get immense joy when going from a blank page to seeing a drawing like a portrait or animal take life in front of me!

To become a competent painter I need to learn the skills

My next challenge in life is to learn a hobby that I can enjoy in my twilight years. I started my journey last winter by attending introductory art classes where I completed 3 acrylic paintings. I realised that to become a competent painter I need to learn the skills to visualise, draw and sketch.

During my childhood I used to love drawing and sketching. As far I remember, woman has been my important subject since then.

My mother was important person in my life. She is a very strong person but could not be immune to social obstacles.

Winning this free course will help me towards my dream to learn painting in a systematic manner. I wish I could go to art school and be professional artist. The various barriers including lack of time and responsibilities of supporting my loved ones form a shell around me. But in my own battle I am trying to prioritize my passion, and learn painting skills.
