How to paint like the Old Masters using modern materials
My name is Kurt and I have been painting since 2008. Actually, I have always been looking for expression, but it took me time to find my means of expression.
At age 17 I was awarded a scholarship to do fashion design at the Art Institute in Chicago. My parents felt I was to young to go to Chicago and I had to decline the scholarship.
As years passed I decided to take an oil painting class where I rekindled my passion for art. The past 3 years I have painted a few paintings, but currently am studying with an actual art instructor. I am drawn to the impressionist style of painting and feel this is what my style of painting is closest to. …
Since I was a child, I’ve always cherished each moment I paint and draw. Growing older, I begin to witness the old masters’ works, especially of those from Caravaggio’s. From the first painting I saw from Caravaggio’s, the lively expressions and charm of the figure and his painting style pushed me to continually improve and refine my painting skills.
Starting this art journey 4 years ago, I was mostly self-taught until I came across the Russian academic arts recently. Interested, I did a ton of research and found that where I live, there is almost none who teach these. From here, I’ve realized that in order to portray meaning and beauty into art, instruction and teaching from professional fine art teachers are crucial to improving on my art fundamentals. Without knowledge, there is no freedom to express visually and accurately. Hence, through a load of research, I discovered the Old Masters Academy and was fascinated by what it teaches. Seeing that it teaches the classical ways, I am amazed and grateful that there is such an opportunity to learn it. …
… Had to try out various styles and techniques, so that the best results could be obtained.. This work of Rubens particularly impressed me as the figures are depicted in constant motion.. every figure tells a story of the role that it has to play with the elevation scene. The body of every individual shows the stress that every muscle underwent during the elevation process.
I wish I could master the art of the great painters with regards to the body paintings. The Old Masters Academy would have helped me refine my techniques much better.
Hoping to win this competition to take lessons from the great Masters brought by the Academy . …

I love art and writing stories.
Art for me is the air that I breath, art is an escape form the real world that makes the latter brighter and more beautiful.
I sense the soul of people and I like to interpret it in my work. I create portraits in oil trying to capture a feeling, a moment, a story to tell.
Art is like a poem. You do not always understand it but calms your soul.
I need to become better in oil, to capture the details, the light and the background. …
