How I felt in love with the Old Masters

Paintings by Pilar Gógar

I’ve been painting all my life. I remember being at my grandma’s house painting with my colors. Later on, at sixteen, I started to practice with my first oil paintings; now, as an adult, I’m struggling to have a career as a fine art professional and being able to live throughout my passion.

I have started to make portraits and solo exhibitions and my dream is to make more and more.

Art is everything to me. I’m happy when I have time to be painting and drawing for hours. Old masters’ works amaze me, so I’ve been always trying to figure out their techniques and tricks. …

I paint and draw reality

Paintings by BJ Haugstad

I started in wildlife art when I was a younger artist. I am now moving in a different direction using different mediums and expressions.

I think the most pivotal part of my life was my mother dying when I was 4 and being the youngest of 8. My father was a stern man who was a sportsman and avid hunter. So for me the segway into the wild life art seemed logical.

I once showed at Les Kouba’s art gallery in Minneapolis MN. I want to grow my knowledge to become more adept and able to create what I see. I struggle with not being loose in my work and for me realism is important. When you grow up with the kind of family I lived in you learn that even if it hurts honesty is important; so I paint and draw reality. I have been fortunate to have studied with a mentor and teacher Charles Pearson (wildlife artist). …

How I fell in love with oil painting

… I painted the famous “Blue Boy” by Thomas Gainsborough, with my cousin’s face, I also painted his partner, who is a good cook, from an old Mozart painting where he is holding sheet music and exchanged it for a recipe.
I was surprised how well these two came out, but the best was the joy it brought everyone when they saw it.

Since then I have painted many portraits, all given as gifts to family and friends, maybe one day my skills will be commissioned, that is the goal so that I can paint every day. …

I dedicated to pursue my career as an artist …

Artwork by Sushma Sharma

My name is Sushma Sharma and my interest in art dates back to my childhood days when I used to practice at home and play with colors for fun.

As I grew older I was indecisive about my career path but I always went back to art as an escape hole.
Art helped me balance my life and helped me find serenity. I currently don’t have a degree in fine arts, however, I attended private classes during my years of secondary and post-secondary education.

Art was a huge part of my life and still is and I practice everyday so I can improve my weaknesses. I am strong at still life and landscapes but lack the feelings that you need in portrait paintings. …

I want to continue learning the historical techniques of the Old Masters

Paintings by DebiLynn Fendley

I’m a 53 year old artist who lives, breathes, and sleeps art but is still forced to have a day job to pay the bills. I have three graduate degrees, one of them an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art. I am single, and art is truly all I have in life. I have sacrificed much, including any chance at a social life or normal familial relationships to make art.

Although I studied art in college, the formal practice of oil and academic painting was not part of what I learned. I think this has left a huge deficit in what I do as an artist. I know in theory the proper way to work with oils, but the demonstration I need to have confidence in pursuing academic painting has eluded me.

I want to continue learning about the historical techniques of the old masters in order to pursue oil painting in an archival way. I have mastered watercolor and acrylics, but oil painting is king. It is and always has been more revered than any other media. …
