The beauty of art

Artwork by Ronald Mutabingwa

I live a life of hassle where my next day is always a miracle to me because I can’t be certain of what I might do due to the unexpected challenges that always await me but I try my best to maneuver and survive that day. And when stress becomes stress I just get my pen or pencil and paper and begin scribbling ,to move away from realty-the beauty of art. …

I would love to learn the skills and techniques for oil painting

Artwork by Nancy Cebula

Art has been my go to since I was a kid. In Junior High School and High School the studio was where I was safe during those tumultuous years. I discovered I liked working with my hands, I liked the smells and getting messy, and I enjoyed the creative process. I love trying new ideas and discovering what works (and doesn’t work). My whole career was based on art as I was an art teacher and worked with all ages from kindergarten to undergraduates and even senior citizens. …

I want to become an established oil painter

Artwork by Louis Anthony

Art takes a somewhat special place in my life. I initially wanted to become a doctor as part of my family tradition, but I got interested in art at a later stage in life, one I think is a little too late to start focusing on arts, anyways.

It was around my 16th year that I thought of putting more focus on art; one way I did so was by adding more focus on formal aspects of art, such as anatomy, as they reflect a testable degree of expertise. …

A birth of a world

Artwork by Zain

I was 10 or so when I entered a drawing contest. I lost. I felt discouraged and did not draw again. Fast forward to my 20’s I fell ill. I was diagnosed as schizophrenic; but I discovered Michelangelo. Then Munch. Then Van Gogh. Then Chagall and also Picasso. Then Basquiat. It opened up a new world and I became an artist.

Art is most of what I do. There is always music on. If I watch tv I look for things to draw in charcoal. My room is my studio. I enjoy this because I can work at any time with ease. If I could go back I would have continued to draw. Art saved my life. …

Its simple. I want to paint like the old masters did!

Artwork by David

Four years ago, on my 52nd birthday, I visited Florence, Italy where I was completely blown away by the Renaissance art there.

It triggered a strong desire to learn to paint so when I returned home, I found a class which taught me some of the basics of painting. This was a great first step but now I feel stuck. I’ve reached a plateau.

I’ve never forgotten how much those beautiful old paintings in Italy spoke to me, but the skills required to paint like the old masters are not taught in local classes. …
