How to paint like Rembrandt mistress

Rembrandt’s mistress

by Rosily Roberts

… In 1641, a fourth child, Titus was born, and survived. However, Saskia was unwell after the birth. In 1642, she made a will leaving Rembrandt and Titus most of her fortune, with the stipulation that Rembrandt’s share would be lost if he ever remarried. She died shortly after, aged only 30, most likely from the plague or TB, and Rembrandt was left alone with a young baby to care for. …

The tragedy that marked Rembrandt’s personal life never stopped him from painting however, and he continued to work up until his death.

Rembrandt’s finances

For the majority of his life, Rembrandt’s main source of income was private commissions for portraits. While Rembrandt did not keep records of his work shop sales, it is estimated by the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam was around 340 guilders. This was the time when a skilled craftsman earned about 250 guilders a year.

He was also able to earn money as a teacher; it is known that he had around 50 pupils who paid him well for a year’s tuition. In addition to selling his own art, he acted as an art dealer, selling works by his pupils, as well as

Joshua Reynolds and his attempts to paint like the Old Masters

by Rosily Roberts

He venerated the Old Masters for creating works which stood the test of time, and felt that no modern work could compete with such paintings. He noted the style and technique of many of the Renaissance masters, including Titian, Michelangelo, Tintoretto and Veronese, whose styles manifest themselves in his confident use of colour. He combined techniques such as chiaroscuro, the dramatic use of light and dark, and the classical contrapposto pose, in which the subject supports their weight on one leg. He worked to marry classical grace with naturalism, creating convincing, realistic portraits that retained a sense of poise and elegance. …

Life at its best—painting!

The opportunity to be enrolled in the Old Masters Academy is to have a dream to come true. I have been “hanging out” at the Old Masters academy website loving every bit of information being shared and am hungry for more.

I recently joined a local art guild to meet other artists and I am aware that need to “fill in the gaps of my present hobbyist/seat of my pants training” with professional instruction. Recently I attempted the old Flemish painting style…and it I had been hard to find complete information regarding materials, techniques, steps….and different artists seem to give conflicting information. …

Mastering the old masters

Artwork by James

… After school I when onto college where I did art and design courses and I then got a degree in fine arts. But they do not do teach you how to paint, which I find frustrating. And that is what I what to master. I paint and draw all the time and when I am not making art I love to go and look at art.

As a child my mother took me to the National Gallery in London and I loved looking at the old master. I think that it is great that the Old Master Academy course well show artists how to paint like one of the great old masters of the. And I would love to be given the opportunity of a lifetime to learn how to master the painting techniques of the old master.

… Not that I feel I can do the Divine justice, for to do so would entail perfection on my part and, being imperfect, that is a forlorn hope. However, I would like to learn much more that would make such imperfections less obvious. My art training comes largely from my mother and, ‘though a fine artist in her own right, she is perhaps not so well regarded as the Masters from Cimabue onwards. It is these – especially the hyper-realistic painters – whose techniques I yearn to master such as my meagre budget affords me, so that I, too, will become well regarded, so that I will attract the John Ruskins and the Charles Saatchis or even the Medicis who can offer me their patronage.

This is one of the beauties of the Old Masters Academy. Never before have I seen so comprehensive and easy-to-understand exposition of the techniques which have made the likes of Michelangelo, Leonardo, Constable, van Dyck et al so vivid and beloved centuries after their return to the Divine, and this is why I want – indeed, so badly need – to study on the course.

My goal is to become a master

… Ten years ago I stopped and took a breath, I retired. I didn’t retire totally but at least my calendar was mine and I could find time to paint. You see the only time my mind gears down from the problems of the day and the world is when I paint or sing. Using that right brain is what relaxes me and makes me a kinder, more gentle person.

I’ve taken lessons from a variety of teachers in our Woman’s Club and a local art association. When I look at the old masters and read of the limited palettes they use I am amazed at the colors and values they are able to achieve. I learn something new from each and every teacher. My goal is to find my style, my best color palette, and become a master at what I do.

As we grow older our lives change and so must we. I hope that the last 30 years or so will be a productive time of creating works of beauty for others to enjoy for years to come.

… I love art so much. I guess painting figures is really challenging also finding the right values and the perfect colors are a bit hard.
I would love to study art to become better and learn new techniques and master human figure and portraits so the best way for that is learning from old masters because they are the best and I really love to make a big effort to achieve my dreams. …
