My Life Long Journey in Art

Artwork by Louis Degni

Then almost as an ominous warning my portfolio of about 80 pieces was lost in a house fire. And so began the dark period, in my life journey through art, from age 21 until recently (age 64). During those years I produced only a few pieces for charity. Life had set in, I had bills and children and all of those things that kept me from art. Perhaps those are just excuses I always did wonder if was “good enough?”

The bills are paid the life obligations met and I am finally back to my artwork, living and painting in Citta della Pieve, Italy. Here in Italy I am surrounded by beautiful art to study. But the road back has not been easy and the reason I am submitting this essay is to see what you think of my ability and if you can help. …

I would love to learn how the Masters painted

Artwork by Suzanne Heitz

I’m a freelance artist residing in the Savannah, Georgia area. These days working from home and running a household takes up the majority of my time. I was raised in Southwest, Louisiana and have been creative as long as I remember. I always had some kind of craft project in progress. It wasn’t until after my first semester of college that I decided to enroll in art courses. I was hooked.

At times art took front and center. However, for many years I was filled with self doubt and made lots of excuses to avoid potential criticism. A few year ago I began drawing and painting and have been actively working on projects; some for myself and some freelance work. …

Art is and always has been a major part of my life

Artwork by Myrna Carr

ART has been in my life from the age of seven. I took a stick and drew in the soil. A special feeling inside me began then and ever since I’ve been involved with art on many levels. At school it was my favourite subject and a painting of mine hung in the assembly hall and this told me I had something. I would be asked to draw by the other kids in my class. On leaving school I went to Art College and on leaving I secured a job as junior to a designer making samplers for company Buyers to see for their new ranges.

I later married, had children and when the girls left school I returned to Art College to do Fine Arts & Textiles course as a full time student for five years. I was aged 37. …

I am an artist, and that is my path

Artwork by Mak Morton

I view the world through the eye of an artist at all times. I see in contour drawing, and primary colors; in shape, form, light, and dark. I am always analysing the world around me.

Art is always on my mind. When I am focusing on an art problem, my mind never rests. The world seems quite surreal sometimes, but I don’t mind.

The Old Masters Academy course seems like exactly what I have been searching for. A specific, step by step, detailed course I can dedicate myself to.

I don’t have a formal education because no school, course, or class has met my expectations by a long shot. …

I want to make my living off my paintings

Artwork by David Miller

I started an art degree in college, but later switched to Information Technology to cover the cost of living and raising a family. I’ve been working in IT Security for quite a while now, but my love has always been painting.

I fall asleep at night thinking about painting. After I finish painting for the evening, I’ll take a picture of my progress, and then I will lie in bed and critique my work for long periods of time. When my eyes won’t stay open any more, I close them and start thinking about how I might paint tomorrow, and I visualize the brush strokes and the colors. I reflect on what I did that really worked and what didn’t. I do this almost daily. I am happiest when I start painting and all the way through the process. …

How-to-paint-old-masters-Rivalry between Raphael, Leonardo Michelangelo

Rivalry between Raphael, Leonardo and Michelangelo

by Rosily Roberts

…The rivalry between the two great masters began in the early sixteenth century, when both Leonardo and Michelangelo were hired to paint vast battle scenes on the same wall of the Council Hall in Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio. The two artists were in direct competition as they each completed their commission. At the time of the commission, in 1503, Leonardo was in his early 50s, and was well known throughout Europe. He was commissioned to paint a huge wall painting of The Battle of Anghiari, a scene from the recent wars between Florence and Milan. Then, just a year later, Michelangelo, aged only twenty-nine and something of a prodigy, was commissioned to paint The Battle of Cascina, a fourteenth century conflict between Florence and Pisa, on the same wall. This commission came months after Michelangelo’s David, arguably still the world’s most recognisable sculpture, was unveiled in Florence. Despite his fame, Leonardo now had a rival. …

Faked sculpture made by Michelangelo

by Rosily Roberts

There are no other known forgeries by Michelangelo in existence, however he was involved with the restoration of the famous Laocoön statue, a Hellenistic marble statue that was discovered in Rome in 1506. There has since been speculation from art historians and critics that the statue might have indeed been another of Michelangelo’s forgeries, however this claim has never been proven.

What has been proven is Michelangelo’s skill and flair, particularly when mimicking the works of the ancient Greek masters, and it was this that allowed his career to flourish and his art to remain in such an important and crucial position in the history of Western art. …

How-to-paint-old-masters-Rubens’s copies of old masters

Rubens’s copies of old masters

by Rosily Roberts

Rubens used a similar treatment in his copy of Titian’s Adam and Eve, which was made during his same trip to Spain. In Titian’s work, Eve is shown accepting the apple from the devil, who is half child and half serpent, while Adam feebly tries to stop her.
In keeping with his own concept of painting, he made significant changes to the original, including a more intense palette. He altered Adam’s posture and made him more muscular, in accordance with his interest in depicting the body as curvaceous. In fact, Rubens’ Adam was based on the sculpture of the Belvedere Torso in the Vatican Museum, another nod to classicism. Eve too is portrayed as fleshier and less smooth than Titian’s own original woman. Rubens has further heightened the drama of the scene by making Adam’s facial expression seem more shocked and alarmed by Eve’s actions. …
