When I saw Vermeer’s girl for the first time on my travel to Europe, in summer 2014, I promised myself I would have this painting in my possession. As there is no chance to get the original, obviously, I decided to make an exact copy of it. …
… In this course, I have learned so many new things about oil painting techniques that were never mentioned during all that time I spent in an art college. My college teachers never told me about imprimatura, dead colors, glazings… I wonder if they knew these things. …
… I come from a small village in Poland. I was born and raised there and moved to states when I was 15. The only thing I knew was school and farm work for the first 15 years of my life. Not very exciting but at the same time I learned a lot about life and hard work at very young age.
I always loved to doddle, never thought of myself as an artist and I still don’t. Like they say: “We are our own worst critics”. I picked up a paint brush for the first time when I was about 30 and only been painting for 8 years. …
I am a young artist that wishes to take part in the competition. I draw and paint for a living and want to learn more from the Old Masters Academy , the Drawing Academy was very helpful and I can Imagine how this one would be.

There is a long road in front of me — my aim is to reach the level of mastery I see in paintings of the Old Masters.
In theory, I understand all instructional lessons from the Old Masters Academy, but I feel that I still lack practice—that’s why I can’t paint on canvas what I imagine, however theoretically I understand how to do it. …
Art has been a part of my life since childhood. As a young teen I was given a gift of pastel chalk… then at 16 my father gave me his oil paints (he dabbled at it). I never have had formal training… did not learn about color wheel, warm/cool colors etc.. until I was mid 50’s when I began taking workshops.
I began with a landscape artist, but after a 5-6 years, I found a portrait artist and took workshop with her and watched u-tube and DVD’s I purchased ….But although my work has evolved over the last 15 years, I still feel my work is lacking what I am looking for…the WOW factor of a great painting. I cannot pin point exactly what I am doing wrong, but know it is wrong. …
