Quite by chance I saw a wonderful realistic full portrait drawing in a gallery window on my way to work. I loved it. I discovered the same painting reproduced on a flyer advertising art classes. I wrote to the painter who never responded and read through his biography to find he trained in Florence, Italy.

Two years later I spent 8 years in two academic academies, and surprisingly never learned to paint the traditional, time honoured way of the masters. I had wonderful teachers and the experience to study the impressionist style, but the desire to paint like the old Italian masters still remains. …

I grew up in a remote village with access to art teachers and art schools. The first time I tried oil painting was about 5 years ago, when I moved to a city and found new friends among artists. My wife says I have art talent. She is very supportive and I think she likes my art, but I know how much I have to learn to paint professionally.

I found Old Masters Academy video lessons when searched youtube for painting tutorials. I think this one of the best art courses on the Internet that can teach me all I want to know about mixing colors, using layers and glazings. I have some art books about oil painting, but watching a master painting in front of my eyes is totally different experience. That is why I want to become an Old Masters Academy student.

My first painting in an international exhibition!

The painting of Alois has been the second oil painting I ever did. It took some time and a lot of tries to get the result as shown here.

But it works better from day to day. And I had (and have) a very good source of information – the “Old Masters Academy” Course!

In September 2017 I decided to send the painting “Alois” to Belfast and to apply for the 136th Annual Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts in the Royal Ulster Museum in Belfast. And the portrait has been selected from 1800 entries received from 930 artists!

I would like to thank you once again for this wonderful painting course and for the continuously great help with my questions.

It would not have worked without the “Old Masters Academy”!

I am now into the 28th lesson of the Old Masters Academy course. I am diligently following all of the instructions for the charts and the practice portrait.

I cannot tell you how thrilled I am with this course. And how much FUN I am having doing it.

I am like so many others I have read comments about, looking for a course that would take me through the way the Old Masters painted.

My name is Brian and I’m a 17 years old artist from the Philippines. When I was a child I never really had a passion for arts but back in 2014 when I was just 14 years old, a fateful encountered happened when I saw a 5 tubes set of Daler Rowney Georgian Oil Paint on our local stationery. I was wondering why would five tubes of paint be so expensive and because of my curiosity and I bought it without knowing that those five tubes of paint would push me so far into the art world.

One of the greatest challenge that I’m facing right now is that there are only few ateliers that teaches the classical method and even if there are some I can’t afford. New York is a magical place, I met a lot of artists here and I got inspired by them. Also, the museums in New York always there to give me numerous resource to learn. I am interested in the old master style of painting. I try to figure out their techniques. I find it hard to make a consistent process of painting like the old masters do.
