Lifelong artist, first time oil painter

Artwork by Paul Potts

This last Fall, I took my first ever oil painting class at a local art school. It was a beginning oil painting class. Like from the basics. I thought, “Still, it is dedicated time to paint every week.” I knew most of the information related to the color wheel and composition from school and the use of acrylics my whole life from 7 years old. So, when we started painting, almost everyone in the class came over to me and said, “What are you doing here. You are not a beginner.” I explained that I wanted to learn how to use oil mediums and what causes the paint to dry faster and how to varnish correctly after I’m done. …

…I have been doing a painting every week since I started that class. …

It is when I draw or paint, time dissolves and become non-existing. It was always like that, because as a little girl, I had to be quiet because my mother was ill. As I never found my way in life, I thought this was not my path. Even getting the best grades in art classes, or applying for art schools didn’t convince me do to my lack of self confidence. I thought I wasn’t good enough. …

I would like to paint like Leonardo, Michelangelo and Rafael

For so many years I have desperate need and will to learn how Old masters were painting. It is such a secret for me and today, unfortunately, nobody have a will to teach you that techniques in that way like you can teach me on your Old Masters Academy course. So I really wish to won this competition to become a complete artist, improve my skills and above all, to show my little son that I can paint like a ‘real’ painter in oil. He still doesn’t believe me! …

I love painting

Artwork by Gail Annette Martin

Have you ever sat outside and looked at the light shinning through the leafs on a tree and discovered, what seemed like thousands of colors, reflecting in the pond below. It is a moment everyone should experience.

I wondered if it was possible for someone, my age, to accomplish the techniques needed to paint this fabulous scene.

After all the kids were raised, my tennis was over, because of bad knees, I needed another outlet for my sole. …

… Improving my art is so important to me. I am 75 now and hope to improve, and get more knowledgeable about the ways of the Old Masters. How did they decide on the composition; why did they choose a certain color to be prominent in their painting? How did they meld their objects into the canvas and make them look so real and alive. I want to learn all of that , now! …
