how-to-paint-Old-Masters-my passion for painting

Translating my passion for nature into my passion for painting

Artwork by Bruce Miller

Growing up in Germany I was exposed to oil painting at a young age ~11. My mother had a friend who painted in oils. I was fascinated and when my mother told me that this was NOT “Paint by number” I replied that I knew that, as I could see the blending of colors to form shapes. I subsequently was able to start a few “lessons” with this woman. My first painting attempt was of a ceramic penguin as part of a still life under this woman’s guiding eye. My fascination with painting continued through high school where I arranged not to “waste time” in Study Hall sessions but instead was able to spend 2-3 hours several times per week in the art room, in addition to my regularly scheduled art classes. …

… During those high school years attending a military family high school in Germany, I fantasized about attending the Art Students League in New York. In the end, my father was of the generation where “Real men” did not do art! So I was dissuaded from following painting as a career path and pursued the sciences. …

how-to-paint-Old-Masters-still love art

Would like to learn

Artwork by Gilma

Since I was a child could not take my eyes away from Leonardo da Vinci’s paintings, but was told by my primary art school teacher there was others with talent.

Now would like to learn to paint and forget about any comments even with no talent I want to have at least basic knowledge. I am not a kid anymore but still love art.

how-to-paint-Old-Masters- in the hope of becoming a true fine artist

… in the hope of becoming a true fine artist

Artwork by Aline Lotter

At the age of 78, I have been trying for 13 years now to hone my skills in the hope of becoming a true fine artist.

In the beginning I was still a practicing tax lawyer, trying to do both art and law, but art became so important to me that it crowded out all other pursuits – I had to retire from the law. I’ve been taking classes and workshops by the dozens. I’ve been having a great time. But, despite my talent and efforts, I have not been able to “break through” or reach that pinnacle of achievement where I can call myself, confidently, a Fine Artist. …

Vote for me because I don’t have as much time as the others to get this done right!

I have fallen in love with paintings of the old masters

Painting by Simon Barnson

I actually started drawing and painting at 40, a few years ago.

I have always had a desire to create, but never had the courage. Once I started I adapted quickly. I have even had my paintings featured in a gallery.

how-to-paint-Old-Masters-Now I want to create art

Now I want to create art

Artwork by Robin Croker Poole

I graduated from college with a BA in Art History. I have always been very passionate about art. I worked as an art consultant and was an assistant gallery manager.

Now I want to create art. I want to learn everything about creating art. I loved the methods of the Old Masters. I love how drawing and painting come together. I love how much effort and time went into making these great works of art.

My artistic challenges are mostly finding a local art teacher who does not teach alla prima, organizing the process of painting, and brushwork. …

The Old Masters are my inspiration

The Old Masters are my inspiration

Artwork by Clive Roberts

As I approach the end of a corporate career I am rediscovering my love of drawing and painting. A 30-year gap and so many wasted hours not learning or honing my skills in visual arts. This has now changed for me.

I attended art school for a short time at 18 but life took me on a different journey and I am now only feeling the inner pull and motivation to dedicate myself fully to becoming a better artist.

As I see it now the truth and beauty in a work of art is found in a strong core set of skills which become the foundation for more creativity and attractive composition and subjects. You can not achieve the latter without the former. How can you reflect the mood and emotion of a subject if proportions are wrong, your technique is flawed, or the treatment of light is poorly executed, and colours are bland and incongruous?

I wish I could paint like the Old Masters

I wish I could paint like the Old Masters, not a Copy Cat….

Artwork by Jonah Lin

My career path is a graphic designer. In the art school, all I learned is how to produce artwork mechanically, from a photo or a copy.

In the field of jobs, I start learning how to use computer software, to manipulate the image, to adjust color, contrast, or using a software plug-in to create a simulated oil painting, pencil drawing instantly. But… in deep of in my heart, I screamed to myself: “You’re not a true artist.”

In the art museum, I am not only aways admire the Renaissance old masters painting and sculpture, but also it makes me wonder, what is the secret, to achieve those masterpieces, how long it will take me to learn. I want to learn their skills, but at the same time, I feel that it’s a Mission Impossible.

Oil Painting is new to me

Painting is new to me

Artwork by Denis

I have done about 75 paintings, all in 2017. I am in a low place in my life after a job loss and loss of my independence.

All my work is in acrylic. I have not done anything this year. I am not sophisticated enough to have a clever answer as to the whys and wherefores of my work and what I want. …

a professional artist career

My lifelong dream has been to pursue a professional artist career

Artwork by Sherry Mason

Recently retiring from a career as a pharmacist, my lifelong dream has been to pursue a professional master artist career. I was juried into membership with the Oil Painters of America and I know that I have the ability but I have not been able to fill in the gaps of my learning.

After watching the demos for the Old Masters Academy, I am convinced this course will provide the elements I have been pursuing to become a more accomplished artist.

I am predominantly self-taught which is reflected in my paintings and I now know what I am lacking. As experienced by Natalie, I am frustrated with the techniques taught by the “Masters of today” who clearly don’t appreciate the fine intricacies of color theory as she described. I learned how little I know and how much I can gain in these seven demo videos than I have been able to amass in all the workshops and books I have read. …
